A local group is asking the Georgia legislature to rename the Rome federal courthouse in honor of former Judge Harold L. Murphy who passed away on Dec. 28, 2022.
Judge Murphy served four decades as a federal judge in Rome.
In an article concerning the history of the courthouse which opened in 1974, our partner Norman S. Fletcher, a former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice, noted Judge Murphy’s importance to our community and the whole northwest Georgia judicial community.
“In his 40 plus years on the federal bench, Judge Murphy established himself as one of its most respected members. He was known for his industry, energy, fairness to all and, of course his dry wit,” Fletcher wrote. “As many who have practiced before Judge Murphy can attest, his mid-witness examination quips were legendary.”
Our firm whole-heartedly supports the renaming of the courthouse in honor of Judge Murphy.
